A hepatic resection is the surgical removal of all or part of the liver. Another name for it is a hepatectomy, which can be partial or complete. A diseased liver is removed from a deceased donor (cadaver) and replaced during a transplant.A portion of liver tissue taken during a partial hepatectomy may also be donated by a living donor. Either open surgery or minimally invasive techniques may be used to do the surgery. Most hepatectomies are done to treat benign and malignant neoplasms of the liver. Benign neoplasms include hepatocellular adenoma, hepatic hemangioma, and localized nodular hyperplasia. The most common malignant neoplasms (cancers) of the liver are metastases; colorectal cancer metastases are among the most common and are surgically resectable.
