Stomach and intestinal issues come to mind whenever we think of a GI surgeon. A surgical gastroenterologist, however, deals with much more than indigestion, heartburn, and acidity problems. A subspecialty of medicine called surgical gastroenterology treats conditions affecting the whole gastrointestinal tract in people. It denotes that a GI surgeon has undergone formal training in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting a variety of GI tract organs, including the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, gall bladder, biliary tract, small and large intestine, rectum, and anus. One of the most important bodily functions is digestion. Food is broken down into nutrients the body can use for energy, cell growth, and repair. This is what it does. It becomes challenging for the patient to exist without an effective digestive system. The GI surgeon will do an esophagectomy to remove both the malignant tumor and the damaged area of the esophagus. In order for the patient to readily swallow food, the treatment also involves resecting the portion of the esophagus that is healthy and connecting it to the stomach.
